On 14 April 2004, Corporal Jason L. Dunham of the United States Marine Corps displayed bravery by throwing himself on a grenade to protect his fellow Marines which was a selfless act as well. While leading his fire team several blocks south from an ambushed Marine convoy, he spotted seven Iraqi vehicles. He ordered his team to search them for weapons and an insurgent jumped out and attacked Corporal Dunham. While engaged in combat, the insurgent released a grenade and Corporal Dunham warned his fellow Marines of the immediate danger. An alternative could have been to kick the grenade away but while being well-informed of his fire team's positions, he selflessly covered the grenade with his helmet and body to shield his Marines from the blast. I believe Corporal Dunham had a brief second to take into account the total situation and become reflectively aware his own basic beliefs such as being able to give up his life for the Marine Corps and for his country.
